Prerequisite Modules:

Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

To explain how polymeric materials are converted into products and to identify the key features of the processes involved.

Syllabus:

The response of polymers to heat, thermoplastics and thermosets Melt processing, materials properties affecting melt processing, rheology and rheometry. Extrusion of plastics, extrusion techniques, analysis of extruder output and power requirements. Injection moulding, process description and product design for injection moulding. Blow moulding, rotational moulding, vacuum forming and related processes, rubber processing and tyre manufacture. Cellular polymers, properties and processes.

Learning Outcomes:

Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)

The student will understand how plastics and rubbers are converted in to products. They will be familiar with the physics and engineering underlying melt flow and shaping. On examination of a typical plastics product they should be able to outline the manufacturing route used.

Affective (Attitudes and Values)

The ability to identify how polymeric products were manufactured. The student will be able to describe the essential features of processes used and their limitations.

Psychomotor (Physical Skills)

The student will gain confidence in the operation of plastics processing equipment, in handling raw materials, production of an extruded or moulded product and in the use of associated test equipment.

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

The module will be taught through an inter-linked and inter-dependent series of lecture, tutorials and laboratory sessions.
